A 10-time Southern California PGA Player of the Year, Block is playing in his fifth PGA Championship this week - and, after a five-birdie, even-par 70 that has him tied for 20th, is looking every bit as comfortable as most of the Tour pros in the field. But then again, Block isn’t your typical club pro. That’s the kind of thing you to say to your buddies in a Saturday-morning fourball match, not to a national-television audience in one of the most high-profile moments of your career. You knew some fun was coming when a mic’ed-up Block, just moments into a walk-and-talk interview on Oak Hill’s drivable par-4 14th, said to ESPN broadcasters Scott Van Pelt, Andy North and Curtis Strange, “Hey, guys, you see my drive?” No, the most engaging burst of content, to use the vernacular of the day, came by way of 46-year-old Southern California club pro Michael Block. The most entertaining 10 or so minutes in the first round of the PGA Championship were not provided by Rory McIlroy or Jon Rahm or even a resurgent Bryson DeChambeau, whose four-under 66 was good enough for the clubhouse lead when play was suspended for darkness Thursday evening. There is also exploration in-between all of the sports, including taking a train, helicopter, or houseboat to check out dungeons, ruins, and the “mysterious Wildlands.Michael Block on his way to an opening even-par 70 at the PGA Championship. From there, gameplay will branch out to include unlockable BMX, minigolf, cricket, volleyball, fishing, and other activities. This new game contains eight more unique golf courses, a tennis world tour, and the ability to start a soccer team.
The game was originally revealed in December 2019, as a more fully featured follow-up to the well-received Switch exclusive Golf Story. The last Nintendo Indie World Showcase had announced that Sports Story would come out on Switch sometime in December, and now here it is at last. Today, the event culminated with the surprise announcement that Sidebar Games’ Sports Story is out now on Switch, available to download from the eShop for $14.99. It is the final day of “ Inside the House of Indies: Holiday Event” at the Nintendo YouTube channel, which has cast a spotlight on several upcoming and newly launched indie games for Nintendo Switch.
